Dr. Parvathi A holds a Bachelor degree in Fisheries Science (B.F.Sc, College of Fisheries, Panangad, Kerala), Masters degree in Fishery Microbiology (M.F.Sc, College of Fisheries, Mangalore) and a Ph.D in Biosciences (Mangalore University, Karnataka). She joined CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography in 2007 as Junior Scientist and became Principal Scientist in 2019. She joined the Department of Biotechnology,CUSAT as a full-time Professor in 2021. Dr. Parvathi has pioneered viral ecology studies in Indian waters. Her primary research interest is in understanding the ecology and molecular biology of environmental viruses and their relationships with bacterial hosts in estuarine, coastal and marine ecosystems. Much of her work focuses on understanding the distribution, ecology and diversity of environmental viruses. Her other research interests include exploring bacterial genetic and functional diversity in marine systems and bioprospecting bacteria for carbon sequestration.
